Digital Storytelling Initiative

Slide Show

Meet the students at Ecole Sinthiou Mbadane 1, our pilot school in rural Senegal, and all the people who made this project happen!

  • One of the many farmland roads we took each morning on the way to school.
  • A view of the school's front.
  • A shot from our initial discussion with the village elders; showing them some examples of what the kids will make. Jeremy is in the blue T-shirt.
  • Some of the village elders experimenting with one of the project cameras.
  • After speaking with the elders, we toured the nearby villages. Issa and Jeremy met the locals while the school director, in orange, gathered up the students we’d be working with.
  • One of our students took us into his home.
  • The director and one of the teachers work with us to create a schedule for the upcoming weeks.
  • The first day in class: looking out on the students we'll be working with.
  • Issa and Jeremy showing the kids sample videos and explaining what they'll be doing.
  • Issa shows the kids one of the cameras they'll be able to work with.
  • Explaining how to work the camera.
  • We handed out the cameras and let the students get their hands on them.
  • More fun with the cameras.
  • We also let them go on our laptops to watch some sample digital stories.
  • The kids figured out how to work the laptops in no time.
  • Lunchtime at the school.
  • Enjoying some cold drinks at one of the teacher's homes after school.
  • A bunch of happy students the day of the final screening.
  • We all watch the videos intently.
  • The students had a blast watching each other's videos and laughing together.
  • A final shot of Issa, Jeremy and all the students.
  • All the teachers and the director together.
